Nonprofit News from NathanAugust 2003 Contents:New websites of interest
New WebsitesThere have been so many new websites devoted to NP management that I can no longer keep up. Here are a few that are recently created or newly discovered that should be of interest to executive directors and board members. Transition GuidesFew boards are well-prepared for the possibility that they might have to
replace their executive director. TransitionGuides is a collaborative team of
consultants, consulting firms, and coaches with extensive nonprofit and
leadership transition experience. They have constructed a website dedicated to
the process and issues involved in leadership transitions. It includes articles
and a Transition Guide to help in recruiting and replacing an executive
director. Governance MattersThe Canadian Cooperative Association's Governance & Leadership Community has
posted a Risk Management Tool and Guide for Co-operatives and Credit Unions. It
is an excellent tool to help all board members understand the concept and
techniques of risk management. The Guide answers some broad questions on the why
and how of risk management and serve as an introduction to the Tool. The Tool is
structured as a series of self-assessment questions to prompt a board to ensure
it understands and is comfortable with its risk management practices. New ArticlesHere are five new short articles worth reading. Three are by Hildy Gottlieb, one by Michael Wyland, and the last is my latest article in Nonprofit Boards & Governance Review
The Dirty Little Secret of NonProfit Boards - Hildy Gottlieb asks “Do all
your board members understand how to read a balance sheet, a profit & loss
statement, and all the other financial data boards typically review and vote
on?” The Inside Scoop on Founders Syndrome - Another new article by Hildy describes what she has learned about working with a board of directors as the founder of a successful agency. In 10 “STOP” Signs on the Road to Board Recruitment, Hildy lists ten of the most common barriers to successful recruitment.
Strategic Planning -- Three Models My latest article for Nonprofit Boards and Governance Review is called: Chairperson's Checklist for Great Meetings. For a shorter, printable checklist (in Adobe Acrobat format), click here New Rules for CharitiesCCRA (Canada Customs & Revenue Agency) continues to change its policies and forms to make life easier for charities. If you run special events, you will want to know about recently implemented administrative policies that provide better tax breaks for purchasers of tickets to charity fundraising events. It may now be possible to give a tax receipt when purchase of a ticket to an event also entitles the purchaser to a chance to win a prize. There are also changes to the policy that covers the tax-deductibility of tickets when the ticket price includes a gift or memento. The new rules are explained in Technical News #26 You will likely find your annual reporting will take less time using the streamlined annual information return form (T3010A),For details, browse to the Charities Branch website Both you and your auditors need to be aware of the new rules!
